Evander Holyfield
msb12 | December 22nd, 2008

I listened to an interview with Evander Holyfield and he came out with some words that I find to be quite fascinating:

“You have to learn how not to get in someone else’s lane and stay in your lane and use what you have because in Boxing, I never was the shortest person, I never was the tallest person, I didn’t have the longest arms but I didn’t have the shortest arms either. I wasn’t the fastest one but I wasn’t the slowest one either and I didn’t hit harder than everybody but I hit harder than some people.

That was nothing I could actually complain about, the fact is I had to learn to use what’s been given to me, what god has blessed me with and use it to my advantage.

I learned to minimize my mistakes. If I can minimize my mistakes, there’s a great chance that I can win. That’s what people don’t understand because when people get fatigued, they start making mistakes. When you start making mistakes, you start beating yourself and eventually put yourself in a position where you helping the other guy out he’s trying to win anyway and now you’re helping him because you’re making all these mistakes.

A great fighter is not afraid to take chances”.

Such great words from a great Champion – Evander Holyfield.

Joint Locks in Jiu Jitsu
msb12 | December 16th, 2008

There are so many joints in the body that give an opportunity for Joint Locks, this is when a joint is taken to the extent of it’s intended range of motion. At this point, there can be compliance established through pain.

Just consider some of those joints on offer:

  • Fingers
  • Thumbs
  • Wrists
  • Elbows
  • Shoulders
  • Neck
  • Knees
  • Ankles

When the joint in question reaches it’s extent of intended range of motion, this is the point when pain starts through extending the soft tissue in the outside of the area (Muscle, tendons, ligaments) and compressing the harder tissue inside (cartilage, bone).

Taking a joint beyond it’s intended range of Motion results in dislocation.

Many techniques in Jiu Jitsu take advantage of Joint Locks, whether it is a style that is intended for competition or a style that is used for Self Defense. Training in such techniques, builds a respect and understanding for the Human Body.

Joint Locks are just one of the areas a Jitsuka can use to gain a significant advantage over an assailant.

Building a Martial Arts School
msb12 | December 11th, 2008

We are coming to the end of the Jiu Jitsu Year, this last Semester has been very busy. Building a Martial Arts School has been quite the task. I have been experimenting with some online Marketing Strategies and the club has doubled in numbers over 14 weeks.

It is a constant system of applying different strategies and monitoring the results. It makes sense to then apply more of the strategies that are giving the best results. I will also be applying, testing and monitoring more strategies.

Over this next Semester, I intend to have at least the same impact and double the numbers again.

More importantly, I appreciate all the students that we already have and will ensure that they receive the best service possible to reach the goals that they have joined our Club to achieve.

It is not possible to achieve and maintain such results on my own. I am fortunate to have some good senior students around me who are available to help with this task of Building and Maintaining a bigger and better Martial Arts School.

There are so many benefits to be gained through an Martial Arts Program like the one that we provide. There is such a great feeling of accomplishment in helping all of my students achieve their own goals.

Building a Martial Arts School is still secondary, my main goal this year is to help all of my students to set and reach their own goals.
