There are so many joints in the body that give an opportunity for Joint Locks, this is when a joint is taken to the extent of it’s intended range of motion. At this point, there can be compliance established through pain.
Just consider some of those joints on offer:
- Fingers
- Thumbs
- Wrists
- Elbows
- Shoulders
- Neck
- Knees
- Ankles
When the joint in question reaches it’s extent of intended range of motion, this is the point when pain starts through extending the soft tissue in the outside of the area (Muscle, tendons, ligaments) and compressing the harder tissue inside (cartilage, bone).
Taking a joint beyond it’s intended range of Motion results in dislocation.
Many techniques in Jiu Jitsu take advantage of Joint Locks, whether it is a style that is intended for competition or a style that is used for Self Defense. Training in such techniques, builds a respect and understanding for the Human Body.
Joint Locks are just one of the areas a Jitsuka can use to gain a significant advantage over an assailant.
