Jiu Jitsu Hold Downs
msb12 | May 18th, 2009

There are several elements involved in a Jiu Jitsu Technique. Many Techniques involve the use of Hold Downs. There are many Hold Downs available using different parts of your body and targeting different parts of your opponents body.

Hold downs can also be called submissions or joint Locks. The one shown below uses the leg to restrain the shoulder. You can see that it would not take much more of an effort to continue the technique and cause a joint dislocation.

Jiu Jitsu Techniques and Terminology
msb12 | July 19th, 2008

This may seem like a complex Martial art with there being so many jiu jitsu techniques and terminology to talk about. There are so many different positions, escapes, defenses, take-downs, throws, hold-downs and strikes that can be used during a physical encounter, whether it be in competition or in self defense.

With this being said, there are also many muscles in the body that must be conditioned to make you become skilled in all of these areas and increase your effectiveness.

To help you become accustomed with the moves, lets go through some jiu jitsu techniques and terminology -

Joint Lock
A joint lock involves taking a joint to the full extent of it intended range of motion and continuing to apply the pressure. If a joint taken beyond it’s designed range of motion is a dislocation.

Knee Bar
Attacking the knee joint of your opponent, hyper extending it to gain a submission.

Ankle Lock
A jiu jitsu technique that manipulates the ankle joint through a rotation ot through applying pressure to the achilles tendon.

Take-Down
This is simply any instance where you take your opponent down to the ground.

Hold-Down
When your opponent is on the ground, a hold down is a method of restraining them and keeping them down on the ground.

Jab
A Jab is a fast straight punch from the hand that is most forward in your stance

Cross
This is a straight power punch, normally from your dominant hand or hand that is furthest back from your opponent. Power mainly comes from the rotation of the hips and shoulders.

Low Kick
This is kick that targets your opponents legs, usually looking to damage your opponents legs at their inner and outer thighs where there are many nerves present.

High Kick
This is a leg strike, targeting the upper body or head of your opponent.

Full Mount
One of the more dominant positions in competitive fighting where you are sat on your opponents mid section.

Front Kick
This is a straight kick to the body or legs of the opponent. The knee is raised and leg simply extended towards the intended target.

Arm Bar
This is a submission where you hyper extend the arm of your opponent. It is very possible to dislocate the arm at the elbow using this technique.

Hook Punch
A power punch thrown at the side of your opponents head or body.

These are just a small number of Jiu Jitsu Techniques and Terminology. They are all very simple but the shear volume of possibilities available can make it all appear much more complex.
