Free From Bullying

It is a fair assumption to say that bullies have existed in every school throughout history. Bullying can make school a nightmare for kids. How do you know if your child is being bullied? It is not something they will often approach a parent or adult about when it happens, so you need to give your child the knowledge and tactics necessary to avoid bullying or put it to an end when it does happen.

Firstly, let your children know that they should tell you, a teacher or another adult that they trust when they feel they are being bullied. The only way to fix the problem is to first recognize it. You should also point out the difference between telling and tattling. Tattling is telling on someone else to get them in trouble, while telling is seeking help for someone who is in danger, be it physical or emotional.

When walking to and from school or sitting in the lunch room, it is a good idea for your child to use the buddy system. Kids are less of a target when they are not alone and they can give each other support. So what happens if your child does not have any friends? It may take a healthy self-esteem for them to do it, but you should encourage your children to reach out to other kids and make friends.

A great way to build self-esteem is to enroll your child in some sort of self-defense program. Rather than building aggression, this will teach them the self-control they need to only fight in a self-defense situation. Not only that, but it will make them feel better about themselves and therefore make them a harder target for bullies.

If your child does bring your attention to safety concerns at school, either with them or another student, you should notify the school. You expect school to be a place where your children can learn in safety and not have to worry about being bullied. This may call for closer supervision or even a training program to teach staff and students how to resolve conflicts without violence.

In today’s society, bullying does not only take place on the playground. Bullying also exists online through email or instant messaging. One way to deal with online bullying is to keep your computer in a high-traffic area of your house, like in the kitchen or living room. This way you can safely monitor your child’s online activity without making them feel like you are invading their personal space. Teach your child not to open any message or email from someone they do not know. If they get a message from someone who is trying to harass them, they should let you know right away. You can also teach them how to block unwanted instant messages.

The most important thing for your children to know about bullying is that they are never alone. You need to create an environment in your home where they feel like they can tell you when something is wrong, and hopefully you can find a school that provides a similar environment. They should always feel like they have an adult they can confide in, so that the problem can be rectified.

msb12 | January 22nd, 2009

Anyone who has been a victim of bullying will understand the horrendous effect that it can have upon you. I’m not just referring to the physical injuries that are obvious to all but the mental impact that can have an even bigger and longer lasting effect.

Learning Martial Arts can do a great deal for many people to help Stop bullying. However, there are many types of bullying that occur in different places such as in the home, at school, in the workplace. It can also occur in many different forms – verbal abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse and so on.

Martial Arts is not the be all and end all solution to all forms of bullying but it has helped and will continue to help for many cases.

We have received several Testimonials to be proud of, at both Jiu Jitsu Calgary and Fightwize for cases from parents whose children were being bullied at School and when these children discovered a new found confidence in themselves by attending classes or courses; this helped to put an end to their particular situations.

The knowledge that you can make a difference is great for boosting Self Esteem at any age.

Let’s remember that bullies, especially in the Schoolyard, are not looking for a fight but a victim and when that victim decides to make a stand then this oftentimes all that is required. It is a big step but confidence and Self Esteem are both big players in the effort to help Stop bullying.

Let’s face it, bullies will always exist so give your children the tools to promote the confidence that will help to prevent them from becoming that victim.

The emphasis is really to “Prevent Bullying” by promoting confidence and not to promote fighting or violence. The advantage to using Martial Arts as a vehicle is the fact that their are so many other benefits that can be gained along the way in the way of fitness, health, spirit, coordination, focus, concentration and so much more.
