OK, so let’s start with the big question that many people ask themselves –“what is Jiu-Jitsu?”

Without going in to the history, keeping it very simple, straight to the point and covering the various components. Jiu-Jitsu forms the basis of Karate, Judo and Aikido. These three arts were extracted from Jiu-Jitsu so that techniques could be practiced safely as it was originally a Battleground fighting skill used in Japan many moons ago, it was developed to eliminate the enemy quickly and effectively.
Judo became a competitive sport, the techniques are predominantly the throws and takedowns.
Karate consists mostly of strikes with both the hands and feet, utilizing many variations of kicking and punching type of techniques. It can be a competitive sport or a Traditional Art.
Aikido is the aspect that deals with joint manipulations, that is taking an attacker’s joints such as the fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders, neck, knees and so on, to the limits of their design in order to control the assailant’s movements. It also uses the attackers own force and momentum against himself.
So coming back to the question “what is Jiu-Jitsu? “ it is actually a combination of Judo, Karate and Aikido, in effect, it could be called a Mixed Martial Art in the modern sense of the term.
Different styles of Jiu-Jitsu have evolved over the years, however, for many the basic concepts are still similar. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a different story. It is mostly a competitive grappling sport and has different origins.
Jiu-Jitsu can be a competitive sport, a traditional art or specifically a system for Self Defense. Police and Military Forces worldwide have adopted many techniques as part of their own curriculum.
Competitive styles and Self Defense Styles are self explanatory but you may be wandering about Traditional. This is a style that makes an effort to teach the art as close as possible to the way it was originally taught. All the terminology is still in its Native tongue and the rituals remain an important aspect.
Let’s also break Jiu-Jitsu down into the various major elements it covers –
Targeting, Striking, Escapes, Ground Defense, Take downs, Hold downs, Weapons Defense and Joint Manipulations
